Governor Kelly appointed Doris T. Chang, Wichita, and Xan Wedel, Lawrence, to the Kansas Complete Count Committee.

The committee was established through an executive order issued by Governor Kelly. The committee serves to coordinate efforts to promote the 2020 Census and encourage a high participation rate. The next Census begins April 1, 2020.

“The Census count is tied to federal funding for our state as well as the number of U.S. House members Kansas has in Congress,” Kelly said. “An accurate count is key to ensuring the success of our communities. I know Doris and Xan are committed to making sure every person living in our state is counted. I’m pleased to have them join the committee.”

Chang, Wichita, is a professor of women’s studies at Wichita State University. Her work focuses on women’s political movements in Asian cultures. Chang is originally from Taiwan and attended high school in the Boston, Mass., area. She received a doctorate in history from Ohio State University.

Wedel, Lawrence, is the senior research data engineer and lead of the Kansas State Data Center for the Institute for Policy and Social Research at the University of Kansas. In this position, Wedel advises students and researchers on Census and other public data.

The governor’s appointments to the committee are not subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate.
