First Lady Ruth Colyer

Ruth was born into a military family. It was through her experiences of growing up in a Hispanic family and moving from base to base that taught her the importance of education, hard work, service and family. These have been Ruth’s guiding principles.

Ruth is a first generation college graduate, who worked her way through college in the Physiology Department at KU Medical Center. While in college, Ruth’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, and this shaped her plans for the future. Having received her degree in biology, Ruth decided to pursue oncology research at the University of Kansas/Dept of Radiation Biophysics, the Children’s National Medical Center-DC as part of the Bone Marrow Transplant Team, and the National Institute of Health/CC as part of the first Genetic Therapy Team. Ruth started her own consulting company working with Children’s Mercy Hospital and the Community Blood Bank.

The Colyer family believes strongly in service to their community. Ruth volunteered alongside Jeff in Rwanda during the Genocide. She saw how struggling and vulnerable communities had given up hope. She is committed to working with communities, in order to help others change their lives for the better.

Ruth and Jeff have been married for 25 years, and have 3 daughters Alexandra, Serena and Dominique. A few years ago, Ruth had a serious accident, which dramatically impacted her life. She is grateful for all the prayers and support she has received, and looks forward to giving back to the community as First Lady.
